As in calligraphy, artists in lav paintings usually grind their own ink pen (Japanese: sumi) over an ink stone to obtain ink, but prepared inks are also available. Most inksticks are made of either pine soot or oil soot combined with animal glue (Japanese: nikawa). An artist puts a few drops of water on an ink stone and rubs the ink pen in a circular motion until a smooth, black ink of the desired concentration is produced. Reprocessed inks are usually of much lower quality. Sumi themselves are sometimes ornately decorated with landscapes or flowers in low relief, and some are highlighted with gold.

Wash painting brushes resemble calligraphy brushes and are traditionally made of bamboo with goat, ox, horse, sheep, hare, marten, badger, deer, boar, or wolf hair. The brush hairs are tapered to a fine point, a feature that is critical to the style of wash.

Different brushes have different qualities. A small wolf hair brush that tapers to a fine point can provide a uniformly thin line of ink (similar to a pencil). A large wool brush (a variation called a large cloud) can hold a large amount of water and ink. When the large cloud brush rains down on the paper, it delivers a graduated swath of ink that encompasses countless shades from gray to black.
